The Time of Day is the sixth episode of series three of the original series of Bernard's Watch Television program.

Summary[]

Bernard is staying with Grandad during the school holiday, but Grandad accidentally hurts his foot. Fortunately, plenty of people have time for him and Bernard.

Plot[]

Bernard is staying round his grandfather's house while his parents are away. Bernard is demanding and always finds something he wants to do with Grandad but Grandad always has time for him. One day, on their way to the park to play cricket they keep meeting people Grandad knows to stop and chat which annoys Bernard. Barnard finds his way out by unclipping the lead of Mr Axtead's dog Sandy or taking a biscuit from Mrs Cathcart's toddler son Jack in frozen time to make him cry. He speeds up the meeting with Mrs Bhanjani by taking her shopping inside in frozen time. When they finally play cricket, Bernard sees the advantage to Grandad knowing a lot of people when they help to catch the ball.

One day, Grandad has an accident while cooking lunch when he drops a leg of lamb on his foot. Bernard instinctively presses his watch when he hears Grandad howl in pain and goes to the kitchen. It is too late to stop the accident but he stops it from getting worse by removing a hot tray from the chair he is about to sit on. After seeing the doctor, Grandad breaks the news that he will not be able to walk properly for several days and therefore would not be able to take care of Bernard. Grandad feels he has no choice but to have Bernard's aunt Patricia take him but Bernard dreads the idea. Grandad's friends they met on the way to the park come round with food and talk to Grandad. They offer to take Bernard out so he does not have to go to his aunt's.

On Tuesday, Mr Axtead takes Bernard to a football match. On Wednesday, Mrs Bhanjani takes him to the fairground and on Thursday, Mrs Cathcart takes him to the beach for the day. Bernard considers this one of his best holidays ever. On Friday, Grandad is feeling a lot better and suggests going to the toy shop. On the way there, Bernard lets Grandad have time with his friends and Bernard shares a biscuit with Mr Axtead's dog and Mrs Cathcart's son.

Trivia[]

  • Grandad appears to have moved house since the previous series as his house now looks older with late Victorian or Edwardian style stained glass windows and floor mosaics. On the way, to the toy shop is Chatsworth road which is in West Bridgford across the River Trent from Nottingham.
  • Grandad's first name is revealed to be Arthur being addressed as such by his friends although he addresses them formally by their title and surname.
  • The games console Bernard plays is a Nintendo 64.
  • Bernard's reaction to Grandad's howl of pain is possibly referenced in the novelisation by Bernard's reaction to Karen screaming for help when his father nearly runs her over with his car when her dress gets caught in the door.
  • Bernard and Mr Axtead are seen wearing merchandise for the Mansfield Town Football Club after the match with Arsenal F.C.

Goofs[]

  • The packs of drinks cans, for the party Mrs Bhanjani was planning for her son, sway as if on string in frozen time possibly giving away the special effects used.
